Over the past two years, many companies have shifted to a hybrid or a completely remote work environment as they realize that their employees can complete their duties remotely. Whether it's the typical 9 to 5, volunteering, internships, or even freelancing jobs, many opportunities are now accessible in a virtual format. However, while working from home seems excellent to many, it can be difficult if you don’t set boundaries for yourself. If you work remotely, use the following tips to design the perfect work-from-home environment.

Designate a workspace

You must establish an area where you’ll work each day. Whether it’s a bedroom designated as an office space or a desk in your bedroom, the area should be a functional space where you can complete work. Avoid working on your bed, as this can cause many issues, such as worsened sleeping habits, reduced productivity, and back pain.

Listen to calming music or sounds

To create a productive work environment at home, play relaxing music or sounds to keep you focused. For example, distracting music may encourage you to start dancing rather than focus on work. White noise is a popular sound many people use to work. Try out different music or a white noise machine to discover the best fit for you.

Stick to a schedule

Creating a schedule can keep you on track while working from home. There are many temptations at home, but you’re more likely to stay focused and get work done if you follow a schedule. For example, set a specific time to have lunch or take a 15-minute break each day (if needed).

Limit distractions

You’ll encounter many temptations at home that can cause you to become distracted from your work. Continuous distractions can reduce productivity levels and jeopardize your job if you fall behind on tasks. To prevent these distractions, do the following:

  • Close the door (if you’re in a room) to limit outside noise

  • Establish boundaries with yourself and those you live with

  • Put your phone on silent or vibrate and keep it face down

  • Take breaks when needed
