HBCUs in Florida
The majority of HBCUs in the United States reside in the southern states. Florida, the Sunshine State, houses four accredited HBCUs that strive to provide top-level education to its students. If you want to relocate to Florida to pursue your college education, consider one of the following HBCUs.
Bethune-Cookman University - Daytona Beach, FL
Founded in 1904, Bethune-Cookman University (B-CU) is a private institution affiliated with the United Methodist Church. B-CU’s mission is to “educate a diverse community of learners to become responsible, productive citizens and solution seekers...” B-CU offers undergraduate and graduate programs within their colleges of Arts & Humanities, Business & Entrepreneurship, Sciences, Engineering, Mathematics, and Nursing and Health Sciences.
Edward Waters University - Jacksonville, FL
Established in 1866, Edward Waters University (EWU), a private Christian institution, was the first independent HBCU in Florida. Ranked #37 in Top Performers on Social Mobility by U.S. News, EWU’s vision is to “become a national model for a dynamic, globally learning center community that champions academic excellence through innovative teaching and learning strategies…” EWU has an intimate classroom environment with almost 1,000 full-time students and offers five undergraduate programs in liberal arts-related specialties.
Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University - Tallahassee, Florida
Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) is one of the three largest HBCUs in the nation and is the only public HBCUs in Florida. FAMU offers almost 100 undergraduate and graduate degree programs within its 14 colleges and schools. In addition, FAMU is home to one of the most famous college marching bands, the Marching 100.
Florida Memorial University - Miami Gardens, FL
Florida Memorial University is a private Christian institution and member of the United Negro College Fund (UNCF). Florida Memorial’s mission is to “instill in students the importance of becoming global citizens through life-long learning, leadership, character, and service, which will enhance their lives and the lives of others.” The university offers 28 undergraduate programs and three master’s programs for students to choose from.
