Graduating from college doesn’t mean you have to cut all ties from your alma mater. While you may not be a student, there are many ways to stay connected with your college or university. For example, a career center is a significant campus resource that current students and alums can utilize to help their careers.

Here are three reasons alums need to keep in touch with their alma mater’s career center.

Networking Opportunities

Most college career centers hold in-person or online job fairs open to students and alums. If you’re looking for your next role, these job fairs are a great way to speak with potential employers and connect with others in your field. Visit your alma mater’s career center website to find upcoming events.

Become a Mentor

Many career centers will partner students with alums in their desired career field or who graduated with the same degree. Mentorship is an excellent way for alumni to help students get advice and direction from professionals in their chosen career fields. In addition, as a mentor, you can act as a guide by assisting students in finding scholarships, job opportunities, and other beneficial resources.

Career Guidance

Not sure of the next step of your career? Do you know which skills or training you need to level up in your current role? Whether you’re an entry-level or a senior-level professional, there’s always room for improvement.

At a college’s career center, you can access an abundance of career services, such as:

  • Mock interviews

  • Resume reviews

  • Career closet (borrow professional attire for an interview)

  • Job board (ex. Handshake)

  • Mentorship

  • Job fairs

  • Career coaching

Each career center will vary in its services, so contact your school or visit their website for additional details.

Don’t abandon your alma mater after you graduate. While you no longer have to worry about dorm life or writing papers, your school can provide several benefits. Continue utilizing your alma mater’s career center to network with other professionals, guide other students, and get career development.
