You've Sent a lot of Applications Without Getting a Response, What Next?

If you have sent out a lot of applications without getting a response from a hiring manager, consider these three tips for moving forward.

Re-focus and revise

One reason you may not be getting a response could be because your resume is not clearly communicating the connection between your skills and the job at hand. Are you throwing the same application at every single job without customizing it? How much time are you spending with each job announcement's description? Focus your application on the specific job skills and responsibilities the employer is looking for by carefully analyzing the announcement. Consider these 5 Tips for Reading Job Postings and identify the keywords of the job description. This will help you focus and revise your resume, cover letter and application for specific positions.

Seek professional help

There are many different routes to finding help with your job application and career search. The HBCU Career Center offers free expert feedback on your resume. Additionally, Dr. Marcia F. Robinson suggests you consult your Career Advisory Board (C.A.B.). If you have yet to build such a board, consider the benefits of having a C.A.B. This group of mentors, career coaches, former supervisors, professors, etc. have a wealth of knowledge that they would love to share. Additionally, when you choose intentionally, you will gather a group who is invested in your success.

Follow-up to secure an interview

If your application materials are close to perfect and you know you are qualified for the position, consider following up after your application has been submitted. There are several things to consider when engaging in this process, such as the hiring timeline, your own timing (2 weeks after submitting the application), politeness as well as emphasizing your value. In the article, "How to Send an Awesome Follow Up Email After a Job Application," Kat Boogard, offers detailed tips as well as a sample follow up email.
