The Propel Center's Grant For Aspiring HBCU Social Justice Leaders

Calling all rising Black social justice leaders! Here is a new opportunity for those interested in fighting against social injustices across America and beyond. The Propel Center announced last week that they would be offering $2 million in grants to HBCU students and faculty to  research initiatives.

According to their website, the Propel Impact Grants will “help to establish institutions as repositories of research for global scholars, startup founders, policy leaders, culture creators, as the world’s most influential business and entrepreneurial minds.” This grant is part of the Propel Center’s Propel Art and Propel Agri-Tech, which are two programs that aim to empower HBCU students with the tools and opportunities needed to address inequities and injustices using “technology, entrepreneurship, education and social impact.”

The Propel Center is partnering with Apple for these grants to develop the curriculum, provide mentorship and internship opportunities, and new learning experiences.  All research opportunities will be offered at the Atlanta University Center (AUC), the Propel Center’s physical campus. These research opportunities will also be available on their virtual platform and at partnering HBCU institutions.

“We envision a world where all people have access to the tools and resources they need to advance justice,” says Dr. Cortney Harris, the vice president of Impact and Engagement for Propel, “This investment will help elevate the way HBCU students see and experience their place in the world, and we’re so thrilled to partner with Apple to help drive this transformative change.”

The Propel Impact Grants will facilitate new educational opportunities, work-study, and career pathways for HBCU students that align with their institutions’ courses, degrees, certificates, and internships. In addition, the Propel Center research institution will provide funding to support graduate and faculty research projects, programs, and new curriculum development.

The first round of the Propel Impact Grants opened on November 19, with the applications being due by Monday, December 7. The grant awards will be announced by Friday, December 17, with the $200,000 grants being disbursed during the 2022 calendar school year. All awardees receive professional and financial support and Apple hardware.
