In 2021, the top five industries that were in high demand included healthcare, information technology & engineering, counseling and therapy, financial management, and digital marketing. As technology evolves and the effects of COVID-19 linger, these industries require a constant stream of talent to fulfill these needs. The following positions are considered the most sought-after for the above-mentioned industries this year.
Software Developer (Average base salary: $73,441/yr)
Software developers design, write, debug, and modify software programs for computers and mobile devices. Software developers often team up with computer programmers to work in roles related to computer systems, manufacturing, finance, healthcare industries, or they become a freelancer (ComputerScience.org). Expertise in Python, ASP.NET, JavaScript, Java, and C#, plus a bachelor’s or master’s degree in software development, web development, or a related degree are required for this career field.
Data Scientist (Average base salary: $97,254/yr)
Data scientists create unique data models, processes, and algorithms to help a company meet its organizational goals and needs. In addition, they also analyze large datasets to identify trends so that a company can adjust its strategic plan as needed (Northeastern University). Data scientists are skilled in machine learning, programming, computer science, statistical analysis, and other related skills. A master’s degree in data science or a related degree is preferred by most employers.
Artificial Intelligence Specialist (Average base salary: $126,538/yr)
Artificial intelligence is a new field with many unknown territories that have yet to be uncovered. With this in mind, there are a lot of opportunities for recent graduates in this industry. An artificial intelligence specialist is a professional with expertise in artificial intelligence (AI) technologies and how to build and operate them (Dynamic Business). Full-stack engineers are software engineers who work on each software development stage from beginning to end (Coursera). “Full-stack” implies that a software engineer has a high level of expertise that allows them to work on both the front (easy-medium level of knowledge) and back end (intermediate-expert level of knowledge) of software programming. Full-stack engineers' duties can involve coding, troubleshooting, fixing bugs, and other responsibilities. Nurse Practitioner (Average base salary: $114,708/yr)
A nurse practitioner provides healthcare services such as clinical diagnoses, patient education, and treatment of health conditions.
