Mental Health Awareness in the Workplace

The COVID-19 pandemic caused a surge in people seeking mental health support. Those who never experienced any mental health disorders began experiencing depression, anxiety, and increased stress levels at home and in the workplace (NIHCM Foundation). While many employers expressed the need to make mental health a priority for their workers, some have fallen short in making those adjustments since the pandemic emerged in the United States over two years ago. 

Fast Company and Harris Poll surveyed 1,079 working adults on workplace mental health priorities to dive deeper into the issue. 

These statistics provided by the survey reveal a need for more employee wellness benefits that support employees mental health.

Here are the results from the study (via Fast Company):

Mental Health Awareness as a Priority

  • 86% of respondents believe mental health awareness is somewhat critical, while 52% thought it was a major priority.

  • Eight out of 10 respondents believe that employers are obligated to prioritize employee mental health.

Discussion of Mental Health at Work and Job Satisfaction

  • 58% of employers feel uncomfortable discussing mental health at work. In addition, 67% aren’t pleased with their current job and are searching for other opportunities.

  • 47% revealed that their current employer has negatively impacted their health.

Wellness and Job Flexibility

  • Almost half (or 47%) of respondents said they have some control over their work schedule.

  • Four out of 10 respondents have access to mental or behavioral health resources at their job. This same group also has comprehensive medical coverage benefits offered through their employer.

  • 13% of respondents revealed that their employers offer unlimited paid time off (PTO), which was reported as the most preferred employee wellness benefit provided by employers.

  • A quarter (or 23%) reported that their employers offer mental health days, but only 6% of respondents consider it their most important benefit.
